What Actually Happens During a Red Light Therapy Session? A Calm Guide from Harlow

The Frequency Hub tree-of-life logo with the tagline Biofeedback & Frequency Wellness, beside the headline: What actually happens in a red light session?

The clocks go back this Sunday (25 October), and the darker evenings arrive with them. This is often the time of year when we feel like slowing down and finding a warm, quiet pause in a busy week. If you've been curious about red light but aren't sure what to expect, this guide takes you through a visit to our Harlow clinic from start to finish. There's no mystery, just what to expect.

First, what is red light therapy?

Red light therapy (sometimes called photobiomodulation) uses panels of LEDs that give out specific wavelengths of visible red light and invisible near-infrared light. You'll notice a soft red glow and a gentle warmth. It isn't UV, so it doesn't tan.

Researchers continue to study how red and near-infrared light interacts with cells, and there is a growing body of published work on the subject (Hamblin, 2018¹). At The Frequency Hub we keep it simple: a red light session is a calm, comfortable experience and a lovely bit of me-time in your self-care routine.

Arriving at the clinic

You'll find us at Unit 92, Greenway Business Centre, on Harlow Business Park (CM19 5QE). We'll welcome you and check a few things before your first session. Please let us know if you're pregnant, take any medication that increases sensitivity to light, have a light-sensitive skin condition or epilepsy, or have had recent skin treatments. If in doubt, check with your GP first.

Your 30 minutes, step by step

Each booking is a 30-minute slot with about 20 minutes on the bed. Here's how it goes:

  1. A private room. You'll have a quiet room with our professional full-body red light bed to yourself.
  2. Getting comfortable. We'll explain what to wear and leave you in private to get ready, at your own pace.
  3. Goggles on. We'll give you protective eyewear and show you the simple controls.
  4. Relax. The bed has panels above and below, using 10 wavelengths across red and near-infrared light (including 850 nm and 1060 nm, as the manufacturer specifies). You simply lie back. Many clients close their eyes, listen to music or just enjoy the warmth and the quiet.
  5. Timer off. The bed switches off on its own 5 minutes before your slot ends, so you have time to get dressed without rushing. Please arrive on time, as we can't extend a session that starts late.

What does it feel like?

It's the question everyone asks before their first visit. A quiet room, gentle warmth and nothing invasive. Most people tell us they simply enjoy the calm. Some clients like to make it a regular part of their autumn and winter routine, and others pair it with a PEMF mat session. We'll happily talk through what might suit you.

Four-legged clients: we welcome animals too, for calm, gentle sessions with you right beside them, offered privately or under the direction of qualified vets. We work alongside your vet and always ask for your vet's agreement first.

Red light at home: pre-orders now open

We're delighted to be launching red light devices for home use. Pre-orders are open now. Full payment is taken by default, or you can choose to pay a deposit if you prefer. Stock is due to arrive in about 6–8 weeks, ahead of Christmas. A device could be a thoughtful gift for someone who loves their me-time, or a way to keep up your routine between clinic visits. Always follow the manufacturer's safety guidance: goggles on, check the distance in your manual, and set the timer.
